Understand Your Vedic Birth Charts (From Classical Jyotisha)
Vedic astrology uses varga (divisional) charts to refine what the D1 promises. This approach is described in classical Jyotisha literature (for example, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Jataka Parijata, and Phaladeepika). For meaningful interpretation, accurate birth time, place, and timezone are essential.
A simple classical workflow
If you are new to varga charts, use this sequence. It keeps the interpretation grounded and reduces contradictions.
- Start with D1 (Lagna/Rāśi)Read the Lagna, Lagna lord, and main planetary placements for the overall promise.
- Cross-check from the Moon (Chandra Lagna)Compare the Moon chart with D1 to understand mind, perception, and lived experience.
- Confirm in D9 (Navamsa)Use D9 to confirm dignity, stability, and long-term maturation—especially for marriage and dharma.
- Refine topics with D3 (Drekkana)Use D3 as a topic-refinement chart for siblings, courage, initiative, and vitality.
Accuracy notes (important)
- Birth time matters. A small time error can change Lagna and house placements.
- Always use the correct timezone (and DST when applicable) for the birth location.
- Different apps can differ due to ayanamsa choice, house system, and node (Rahu) definition.
- These charts are an educational aid rooted in classical frameworks. For personalized guidance, consult a qualified practitioner.
About degrees in D9/D3
Divisional charts are primarily used for sign-based placements. The degrees shown on this page are the planet’s sidereal longitude from D1 (used for display consistency), not a recalculated ‘varga degree’.
Methodology & assumptions
To help you compare results with other software, here is what this calculator uses.
- Zodiac: Sidereal (Nirayana) with Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris; if ephemeris files are unavailable, calculations may fall back to Moshier data.
- Ascendant & houses (D1): calculated with Swiss Ephemeris house calculation (Placidus cusps) and converted to sidereal by subtracting ayanamsa.
- Varga houses (D9/D3) and Moon chart: houses are treated sign-based relative to the chart’s reference ascendant (varga lagna / Moon sign).
- Nodes: Rahu is shown as the Mean Node; Ketu is derived as exact opposition (180°). Aspects are intentionally not shown.

What to look at in each chart
These are common, non-predictive checkpoints used in classical study. Use them as a reading guide.
D1 (Lagna/Rāśi): foundation
- Lagna sign and Lagna lord placement (sign/house).
- Sun and Moon placement (vitality, mind) as a baseline.
- Strong themes: repeated sign emphasis and key house activations.
D9 (Navamsa): confirmation
- Planetary dignity confirmation (does a planet remain strong or become weak?).
- Stability indicators for marriage/dharma themes (confirming D1 promises).
- Overall strength: how many planets occupy supportive signs in D9.
Moon Chart (Chandra Lagna): experience
- Moon sign as the reference for mind and perception.
- Compare houses from Moon vs houses from Lagna for promised vs felt experience.
- Which planets influence the Moon’s environment (nearby placements).
D3 (Drekkana): courage & siblings
- Indications for courage, initiative, and the ability to face effort.
- Sibling themes (support/rivalry) as a refinement of D1.
- Consistency: whether D1 and D3 point in the same direction for vitality and drive.
Legend (how to read the display)
- North Indian and South Indian styles show the same chart data in different layouts.
- “R” means the planet is retrograde (Vakra) at birth.
- House numbers are computed relative to the chart’s reference ascendant (Lagna / Moon / varga lagna).
- The sign symbols represent the 12 rāśis (zodiac signs).
